The Petition Process

March 7, 2020 By oregonbishopsearch_o3kzwx

The petition period is now closed.

The 11th Bishop of Oregon Search Committee will present the slate of nominees on March 6, 2020. Realistically, despite their best efforts, some people may look at the slate and feel that it is lacking. They may feel strongly that there is someone else who ought to be on the slate, but isn’t.

For these people, there is an alternate process to enable their candidate be put before the diocese as a nominee. This is the process for receiving additional nominations, which is formally called Nominations by Petition.

How does the Nomination by Petition process work?

The process of overseeing nominations by petition is the responsibility of the Standing Committee.

To use this process, at least four members of the clergy entitled to vote in the Electing Convention and at least four communicants in good standing of a parish or mission of the diocese would have to sign a petition nominating a priest.

Additional requirements:

  • The petitioners must come from at least three congregations in at least two convocations
  • All the requested information must be provided
  • The nominee’s background check must not produce any red flags

If all these conditions are met, the petition nominee’s name will be added to the final slate of candidates appearing on the ballot at the Electing Convention.

What needs to be included in a nominating petition?

The nominating petition will be available as an electronic form starting March 7, 2020. The information collected will be:

  • Nominee name and contact information
  • The nominee’s answers to three questions which were part of the original applications
    • Respondents to a diocese-wide survey identified Spiritual Leadership as one of the most important characteristics of our next bishop. What are the hallmarks of spiritual leadership and how do you embody them in your life and ministry?
    • Our Diocesan Profile outlines some of the opportunities for growth we face in the Diocese of Oregon. How would you exercise episcopal leadership in addressing one or more of these opportunities?
    • Describe a time when you had a cross-cultural experience. Please share with us how you responded to it, what you found challenging, and what you learned from it?
  • A brief introductory paragraph from the nominee, 3-4 sentences of no more than 150 words
  • A one page resume
  • A recent formal photo in clericals
  • Signatures of those submitting the petition
  • Written consent from the nominee agreeing to be nominated
  • Written consent from the nominee to a background check
